Risk and Resiliency

IFECMH Knowledge Area

The chance that a child will overcome a traumatic experience is much greater if the child’s mental health is nurtured at an early age. Professionals with the IFECMH endorsement understand these risks factors and are able to support families and educators to promote childhood resiliency.

Some of the competencies that must be achieved include:

  • Demonstrates knowledge of the effects of risk factors such as genetics, medical complications, prematurity/low birth weight, substance exposure and teratogens, and the impact of familial, cultural, social, physical and/or economic factors including poverty, abuse, and neglect on development and relationships.

  • Considers the concept of resilience and the protective factors that influence it.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of the impact of familial, economic, or social factors on relationships and social-emotional development.
